1st Friday at District 7 Tavern: A Night of Unity and Power

Last Friday, September 5, 2024, the District 7 Tavern in Roxbury was filled wall-to-wall with energy, laughter, and solidarity. The very first “1st Friday” event was a complete success. Community members, labor allies, and grassroots leaders came together not just to network, but to build relationships rooted in justice, equity, and collective power.

A Powerful Kickoff

From the moment the doors opened at 4:00 PM, the space buzzed with conversation. Organizers, workers, and advocates connected over shared struggles and common goals, creating a true atmosphere of unity. The event was hosted by a powerhouse of organizations — the AFL-CIO Racial Justice Committee, APALA, LCLAA Greater Boston, APRI, and CBTU Boston — each bringing their own networks and experiences to the table.

Food, Connection, and Movement-Building

The night wasn’t just about speeches or handshakes. Attendees shared good food, enjoyed the tavern atmosphere, and engaged in meaningful conversations about what it will take to advance racial justice, worker rights, and community empowerment in Boston. The mix of casual connection and serious organizing created a space where ideas flowed freely, and collaborations began to spark.

Why It Matters

The success of this first gathering confirmed something important: when we come together, we are stronger. 1st Friday is more than an event; it’s a tradition in the making. It’s about creating regular opportunities for communities to stand shoulder to shoulder, celebrate victories, and strategize for the fights ahead.

Looking Ahead

This was just the beginning. 1st Friday is here to stay — a monthly chance to deepen relationships, expand solidarity, and keep building a movement that reflects the diversity and resilience of Boston’s working people.

Stay tuned for details on the next gathering. If last Friday was any sign, the momentum is only growing stronger.
